A self-declared “Word Nerd,” it’s not surprising that David Cook is able to express his thoughts on his CD, his career, and life in general.  As he puts it on his official web site, “There’s a lot I haven’t shown the world, just as far as who I am and what I’m about. I have several layers as an artist and those layers are out there on this record.  I don’t see myself ever writing an autobiography; I’m just going to let the music speak for itself.”

The part of David Cook he showed us during season seven was certainly effective.  His use of creative arrangements of some popular songs, like the amazing rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” resonated with fans everywhere.  He not only came up with some original arrangements on his own, but he knew enough to pick songs that fit his style to a tee.  Ironically, David originally came to support his brother, Andrew, when he auditioned for AI in Nebraska, and only tried out at his brother’s urging.

His post-Idol work has already caused quite a stir in the business, and he’s even broken records formerly held by music legends.  One week after winning, David had 11 of his songs debut on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, which is the highest number of new entries in a single week by an artist since The Beatles in 1964!  The song David sang at the finale, “The Time Of My Life,” led the way, making its debut at an impressive #3 on the Hot 100.  That same week, David broke the record for the most debuts on Billboard’s Hot Digital Songs chart, with 14 entries.  The previous record had been set by Bon Jovi, with six in 2007.

The best part is David has been able to do this while working with his musical legends, and putting his own spin on everything he’s done.  As he also stated on his web site, “This is my first major-label release and that gave me some room to be a bit of a chameleon and try different things.”  Legendary producer Rob Cavallo helped David hone his skills, and he allowed the songs to fit David as opposed to the other way around.  Some of the musical greats he was able to collaborate with on songwriting were Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, Nixons singer/guitarist Zac Maloy, and one of David’s personal idols, Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida.

Having a hand in the songwriting, David was able to tell stories that have personal meaning in his life.  David wrote the song “Permanent” for his brother, Adam, who is battling brain cancer.  According to David’s web site, it took them two takes to record this song, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when it was finished.  As David put it, “As a musician, any time you can create something where the end result is exactly what’s in your head, well there’s a heaviness to that moment and it overwhelmed me.”

Despite his hectic schedule promoting his album and performing all around the nation, David took the time to sit down with us and talk about his success.  Watch the video!  Also, make sure to check out the amazing, extended version of the American Idol season eight promo, featuring David!

Happy Birthday, David!

It was obvious on season six of American Idol that Melinda Doolittle was not one to complain about much, but the fact that she gets her best sleep on the bunk in her tour bus is still a tad shocking!  It’s a good thing, too, as Melinda is on the road a lot these days.  In fact, she wraps up her Christmas tour with Michael W. Smith tonight.  This is actually the second Christmas tour she’s done with Michael, as well as the Michael W. Smith Cruise 2008, during which she and Jordin Sparks sang a duet.  Melinda calls Michael “really supportive” and “such a veteran,” and admits that working with him has been a wonderful learning experience for her.

Melinda also credits American Idol with helping her learn and grow.  Despite having experience in the music industry as a backup singer, Melinda calls AI “my bootcamp,” and says it really prepared her to perform in front of people as an artist.  On “Idol,” she says that you’re basically given a minute and a half to get your point across to your fans.  In comparison, she finds it easy if she’s given three minutes to accomplish the same task!  Melinda also points out that the American Idols LIVE! Tour helped her to hone her performance skills even further.

As many might recall, Melinda became known on AI for the level of humility she showed when receiving praise from Simon Cowell.  She says she is still in shock about it!  Melinda kept thinking to herself, “That’s Simon Cowell!”  Calling him “150 % honest,” she considered his positive critiques a huge honor.  It really helped to boost her confidence.

Another confidence booster, according to Melinda, was finding music that really spoke to her.  With the level of excitement she feels about the songs on her upcoming CD, she doesn’t get quite as nervous at the thought of performing.  Instead, she just feels pure, unadulterated joy every time she’s able to sing anything from the debut album.  What can fans expect?  Melinda says it has a “retro-soul vibe,” calling the first single, “It’s Your Love,” “my anthem.”  She loves the throwback feel to the songs because they still somehow manage to sound current.  The best part about making the album for Melinda was the fact that they took their time with it, so she was able to really make it a labor of love.

The CD was produced by Mike Mangini who has worked with the likes of Joss Stone, Run DMC, and The Jonas Brothers.  While Melinda didn’t write any of the songs on the album, they still mean a lot to her.  She says she is “still in the learning process,” and definitely hopes to write some of her own songs in the future, but the tracks on her debut album have great melodies while telling some even greater stories.  Mike made sure to add a little bit of everything on the CD, with the instruments as varied as the songs themselves.  Melinda said fans can expect lots of horns, strings, keys, and guitar.  Cindy Blackman, Lenny Kravitz’s drummer, even performs on each song.  Interestingly enough, Melinda is her own backup singer on one of the songs, calling herself “my own doo wop girls!”

Although difficult for her to choose a favorite, “The Best Of Everything” is the song that “would have to win the prize for me,” says Melinda.  It’s an old Johnnie Mathis tune that Mike took and made into a version that Melinda just adores.  In fact, she asked that they record this song last so she could really enjoy it.  What she loves about it is that it has “so much soul and so much drive,” adding that it’s “bluesy” and very “in your face.”  Although she hasn’t toured with her own material just yet, Melinda has had the good fortune to preview a lot of the songs already.  She opened a show for Peter Frampton in Nashville, which was the first time she was able to perform the new material.  She was also able to sing at the “Rock The Vote” event this year.  Best of all, Melinda’s best friends are backup singers, and she says that they are very honest.  It meant the world to her that they love her CD as well.

Melinda also gets feedback from some of her AI peers, with whom she stays in constant contact.  She says she talks to Jordin all the time, and she even attended LaKisha’s wedding in Los Angeles over the summer.  She keeps up with everybody, and is so proud of the accomplishments by her fellow Idols.  She has also been in contact with Phil Stacey and Chris Sligh, who are both in Nashville, where Melinda lives.  Melinda has a theory about why they were able to get so close during season six, and she said that it’s because AI is such a specific experience, creating a sort of bubble around them.  It makes the experience that much more intense, and she thinks of them as her family.

Fortunately for Melinda, she gets to spend the holiday with her actual family, and she is ecstatic about being with her mother.  However, there won’t be much rest for the weary, as Melinda heads into tour rehearsals next month!  Although her tour dates have not been set yet, she said that the Music Director is putting together the band as we speak, and Melinda couldn’t be more thrilled.
