While the rest of us were on the edge of our seats trying to figure out how the eliminations were going to go the other night, Kristy Lee Cook says she had a feeling there were going to be some surprises, so she just tried to remain calm. In a phone interview with Kristy after her elimination, she did admit, however, that her repeated time in the bottom 3 took its toll. As she said, “It’s been kind of tough being in the bottom three, but I kind of – with the first few times, I kind of built up a stamina for it and kind of got a little tougher each time, and finally, kind of learned how to control the emotions that were coming from the whole situation.” Ultimately, the final elimination was obviously the toughest on Kristy, not just because she would be going home, but because she felt it was her strongest performance to date. She also wishes she could have showed America a little bit more of her country side. But, as she put it, “The show’s about being versatile and being able to do other things out of your element, and you have to be able to be versatile, and I thought I did a pretty good job considering I had never done that kind of stuff before, so I was really happy to have that kind of opportunity to be able to expand my genres and try different things.”
When asked her opinion on the top 3, Kristy Lee pretty much took the stance of all the eliminated Idols before her, saying that the competition is so fierce this year, it really is anyone’s competition to win. She pointed out that this is particularly true with surprising eliminations like Michael Johns’ departure the week before. Kristy doesn’t think anyone’s prior experience has much to do with the ultimate outcome, as many of them have had careers before the show started. “…everybody has some sort of music background, so it’s kind of like, we weren’t discovered before this whole thing, so this is—it’s kind of like a second chance. And everybody, I believe, deserves a second chance, so it was a great opportunity for all of us.”
When asked why she thought Simon might have been so skeptical about her at times, Kristy said that it was most likely because of her rough weeks at the beginning. She said she was sick for the first three weeks, and really had a difficult time recovering. But she also said that, when she was on stage, she’d get caught up in the excitement, and sometimes she’d have to go backstage and ask her AI peers what the judges actually said! Most importantly, she tried not to dwell on the negative. Kristy Lee joked that she got her own revenge on Simon by singing to him during her farewell song, which he told her made him feel “awkward.” She told him “Well, now, you know what it’s like to feel like us singing in front of you all the time.” When asked about the infamous “blow you outta your socks comment” she made to Simon, Kristy said it takes a lot more than that to make her embarrassed. She said what she basically meant was “Watch out because I’m going to show you what I have.”
Kristy also addressed her song choice of “God Bless The U.S.A.” which turned her around on the show. She said that she and her sister were the ones who decided it might be a good song for her to sing, as she loves that song and has sung it numerous times before. However, she said it wasn’t manipulative, as some have speculated. Because she had performed it before, her dad was in Vietnam, and it was a song from the year she was born, it was simply an “instant yes” in her mind. Kristy also stands by her decision to sing her country version of The Beatles’ song “Eight Days A Week.†She said a lot of people from the show loved her version, and if the judges had given her positive reviews, she thinks America might have warmed up to it as well. As far as Andrew Lloyd Webber week, Kristy Lee was looking forward to taking on the huge song “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.”
Kristy also talked a little bit about how her fiancé, Andy, had asked her to marry her when the cameras stopped rolling on elimination night. He had actually asked her before, but thought that it would be special to take advantage of asking her once again in the presence of others. Originally, he asked her in the sauna at the apartment where she’s been living, as it was the only area they could have any privacy! When asked who her dream wedding singer would be, she named Celine Dion. And she said she would definitely consider inviting the judges!
One thing is for sure—Kristy Lee Cook feels like she’s walking away from “Idol” having
learned a great deal. “It’s been an amazing experience. I’ve learned all different kinds of stress levels I’ve never known in my life, but I’ve known – I learned how to make friends and what people can – what singers go through to do – perform every week and learn songs every week and sing in front of thousands or millions of people. And I just – I learned a lot about controlling your emotions and a lot about just having to handle pressure – but dealing with also having tons of stuff to do. It’s very, very fun. Even though you’re tired, you get to do so much stuff you never would – you never imagine you’d be able to do until you got on the show. So there’s so much to learn from it, and I’m just thankful for every moment of it. It was so much fun.â€
