While Simon Cowell is a prominent figure in the media today, his transition into his impressive career wasn’t always smooth sailing. Like many people just starting out, he began his career in the mail room at EMI Music Publishing. Having quickly learned the ropes, Simon teamed up with Pete Waterman to form an independent label called Fanfare Records. Fanfare actually folded in 1989, forcing Simon into bankruptcy and subsequently back into his parents’ home. He became an A & R consultant for BMG and this is where he began to enjoy much success. He signed up a number of huge acts. In 2002, he started another label, Syco Roecords, which became part of Columbia Records and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, where he remains today.
However, he is definitely more recognizable as the judge everyone loves to hate on many shows, including, of course, "American Idol." [...]

According to the Boston Herald, season two’s shy Idol, Jennifer Fuentes, broke out of her shell on Friday in order to step into the ring…the center of the ring for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, that is. She credits "American Idol" for helping her to move beyond her timid nature.
American Idol couldnt have possibly better prepared me for the circus and being broadcast live on a huge video screen to thousands, Fuentes said yesterday. I was so shy. Ruben Studdard was in my group and made me feel so comfortable. We became close friends.
She is thankful that they haven’t had her in a cage with lions yet, but she has tried other things, such as jumping on the trapeze bars, juggling, and walking on stilts. But what she really came to do was sing, and she was given the opportunity to do so at the show [...]
